Our TAKE TEN festival here at the Gem theatre kicks off with these two hitch- hikers arguing over a square metre of real estate along the Warburton highway. This truly absorbing and surprising piece,. Entitled "Confessions", was written by Lilydale writer, Julie Cunningham and brought to life beautifully on stage by local teachers Sonia Morrison on the left and Tina Chalmers on the right. Their director, Andrew Tomazos will be no stranger to Gemco regulars or indeed theatre patrons more widely.
Julie submitted this play in 2019 as one of ten chosen from a pool of thirty. Other local writers chosen were Daniel Hill from nearby Selby, Kerry Turpie from Kangaroo Flat and Michael Olsen from Greensborough. The rest have been sent in from writers from other States and world wide.
We think it's a fabulous collection. But which one deserves the prize?Come along and help us decide!

Joe Creighton is no stranger to the Australian Music Industry having shared the stage with many Australian and international artists throughout a 40-year stellar career. Artists such as John Farnham, Olivia Newton John, Kylie Minogue,The Black Sorrows, Mark Gillespie, Boz Scaggs, Ray Charles, Tony Joe White and Rodriguez (Sugar Man) to name a few. Joe is more recently known for his own body of work with his unparalleled show Into the Mystic – The Music Of Van Morrison. He brings a great authenticity to this consistently sold-out show having grown up on the streets of Belfast and watching Van perform with his band ‘Them’.
In his newly worked solo show, Just A Boy From Belfast, apart from spinning a yarn or two as the Irish often do so very well, Joe performs material from his four highly acclaimed solo albums while adding a selection of songs from his greatest influences such as, John Lee Hooker, Willie Deville, Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan,Tony Joe White, JJ Cale and of course Van Morrison.

However they choose to play, they bring their story and their songbook which stretches to over 40 albums. They make show like few others. During the initial Melbourne pandemic lockdown they started doing online shows every week, sometimes twice a week and revisited songs from all these albums as well as workshopping new material. They kept their performing nerve and playing and writing skills sharp. Then the lockdown eased and they played some shows around Australia. Then the lockdown came back again. Lucky their lockdown nerves held too.
The duo’s latest album is a classic Compact Disc packed with too many songs for vinyl. It’s an album for the freaks called EVERYTHING WAS FUNNY.
